B. Prescription Information

Why do I need a prescription?

Under federal law, medical devices are categorized into 3 classes–class I, II, or III- based on their risks and the regulatory controls necessary to provide a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CPAP devices are considered a Class II Medical Device, and as such require a prescription for distribution.

There are a couple of reasons why a prescription is necessary to purchase CPAP medical equipment:

  1. Prescriptions come with a set pressure setting based on results of the sleep study. A machine cannot be adequately set without pressure settings. Pressure settings should only ever be determined by a board-certified sleep specialist's interpretation of the sleep study.
  2. Some patients being treated with CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea develop mixed sleep apnea (central sleep apnea events that emerge after therapy). Patients with mixed sleep apnea may need a different PAP machine that responds to central events such as a BiPAP machine or ASV machine.
  3. Without a prescription that includes pressure settings based on the patient's apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and lowest oxygen saturation (SaO2), patients may not receive the best care. Inadequate settings can be harmful to a patient's health.

How do I obtain a CPAP prescription?

Consult your primary care physician or sleep physician, and in doing so, he or she may recommend a face to face consultation.  Through examination, it may be found that a sleep study is necessary.  

After a sleep study is completed, a board-certified sleep physician interprets the study and recommends the pressure settings on the device based on the patient's AHI and the lowest oxygen saturation (SaO2) percentage.

The physician can either write the prescription or forward the prescription recommendations to a licensed medical professional.

For the most part, a prescription may be filled out by any MD or DO licensed to write Rx. However, the scripts are almost always based on the recommendations of the interpreting physician. It is always best to have a prescription from a board-certified sleep specialist.

C. Cleaning Instructions

Do I need to clean my equipment, and how should I do this?

Cleaning your equipment is vital to ensuring good health! Please see our cleaning procedures located below:

Mask

Clean mask cushion/pillow daily with warm water and Purdoux Mask & Hose Soap. Rinse the mask’s cushion/pillow with water thoroughly during cleaning. Soaps can be purchased here: (Unscented) (Scented) Your insurance company will allow you to replace your mask every 3 months.

Headgear

Hand wash in mild fabric detergent as needed. Allow to air dry. Headgear is replaced with the mask.

Tubing

Disinfect tubing every 3 days. Rinse tubing with warm water and Purdoux Mask & Hose Soap. Allow to air dry after every session. Soaps can be purchased here: (Unscented) (Scented) You are eligible to replace your tubing every 3 months.

Humidifier Chamber

Empty chamber daily and replace water to the FULL line, or below, with DISTILLED WATER only. Disinfect water chamber every 3 days by washing with warm water and Purdoux Mask & Hose Soap. Rinse thoroughly with distilled water and allow to air dry. Soaps can be purchased here: (Unscented) (Scented) You are eligible for replacement chamber every 6 months.

*Do not place chamber into dishwasher unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer*

Filters

ResMed Devices: The WHITE Fine Particle Filter is disposable. Replace this filter every 2 to 3 weeks, or when it looks dark in appearance. Do not wash these filters. You are eligible to receive 6 new filters through your insurance company every 3 months.

Respironics Devices: The WHITE Fine Particle Filter is disposable (This filter can be solo or enclosed in a light-blue frame). Replace this filter every 2 to 3 weeks, or when it looks dark in appearance. You are eligible to receive 6 new fine-particle filters every 3 months. The large BLACK or WHITE Filter (if white, it will be enclosed in dark blue housing) is washable by simply rinsing under warm water and allowing to dry thoroughly. You are eligible to receive a new large filter every 3 months.
